LAST WEEK in Kindergarten…

Our visit to the Children’s Treehouse was so much fun!  Thank you to all the parents that came.  We learned that fairy tales come from all over the world and different parts of the world tell the same fairy tale differently.

Some of the children got to become actors and actresses in a participlay in the fairy tale, The Golden Goose.

They also made magic wands.  We have been using these in class but watch for them to come home this week.

Our class met our OPA Reading Goal for last quarter and that meant that we got to have another bubble blowing party!  We practiced and practiced trying to blow bubbles.  We had to say, “It’s good to do hard things”.  That bubble blowing is hard work!

In math we are continuing to work on more than and fewer than.  We compared our first and last names to each other to determine which one had more and which one had fewer.  Then we determined how many more/fewer.  We also compared towers of unifix cubes.

FOLDER
I hope you took time to look at your child’s Language Arts Unit 4 Assessment that came home in their blue folder.  Please sit down and review it with your child.  Celebrate the ones they got right!  Then, review and continue to work on the ones they missed.

LAST WEEK…

SCIENCE – We began studying about Living vs Nonliving Things.  We observed the difference between a rock and meal worms.  A living thing can: move on its own, breathe, eat & drink water, reproduce, grow & change.

MATH – We are learning how to compare sets (a group of objects) and numbers.  We are using the vocabulary: fewer than & more than.  We are also learning how to calculate how many fewer and how many more there are in each set.

WRITING – Our eagle writing is really coming along!  I can’t wait for you to see the book they are each writing!  I think you will be impressed!  We have written about what eagles look like, where they live, and this week we will write about eagle babies.  Next week we will finish them by writing about interesting eagle facts.  Then we will submit them to the Love Your Library Contest.

THIS WEEK…

High Frequency Word Cards (orange) – The next set is in your child’s homework folder.  Please cut them out and begin working on them every night.

HOMEWORK this week is all about getting prepared to celebrate 100 DAYS of KINDERGARTEN!  Please read it carefully.  Your child’s job is to put together a collection of 100 of the same item.  Then put it in the bag (provided) and bring to school along with 3 clues about their collection.  Examples are: 100 Legos, 100 pieces of ribbon, 100 pennies, 100 Cheerios.  Then write 3 clues about your item.  For example if your child brought 100 buttons they could say –

1.      They are on clothes.
2.      They are a circle.
3.      You use them to hold things together.

You may help your child spell words but, please have them do ALL of the writing.

100 Day is this Thursday but, because that is the day of our field trip to the Treehouse Museum we will celebrate 100 day the following Monday.

Week 21

I hope you and your child had a relaxing long weekend.  I sure enjoyed mine!  Now we are ready to get to get back to work!  A little bit about this week…

DIBELS
Our DIBELS testing will begin this week.  It is very important that the children come rested and well fed each day so they can be alert and ready to do their best work.  If you would like to know the areas in which they will be assessed please refer to last week’s blog post.

LIBRARY
Tomorrow, Tuesday is our library day.  Remember that starting last week the children will be checking out 2 books each week.  They may return them and check out new ones any morning before school and/or on Tuesday during our library time.

MATH
We are beginning our next unit of study on Comparing Sets.  The children will learn how to compare two numbers within 10.  They will learn to use the vocabulary – fewer than & greater than.

Make sure you look for the 2 assessments that will be in your child’s homework folder this week.  They are for Math Units 8 & 9, WEIGHT & CAPACITY.  Everyone did fantastic!!!  Please make sure you review them with your child and CELEBRATE their successes!  I am so proud of everyone!

Week 20

Goes out to several of our kiddos!  Eli, Karlee, and Oaklyn earned an extra special surprise stuffed animal for being our 3 Top Raz Kid Readers over the Winter Break!

Then, Ellis, Avery, and Oaklyn passed off a level in Raz Kids over the Winter Break!  They got to clip-up on our class chart and earned a free Pizza Hut Coupon!

RAZ KID REMINDER your child should be on or close to finishing
level A to be on track for 1st grade.  All children should be ready to begin level D by the end of kindergarten.

That means they will have completed the following levels: aa, A, B, and C.  ALL children should be working on Raz Kids at least 3 days each week.

We also had a really fun Hot Chocolate Party on Friday for those children that turned in their completed Hot Chocolate Challenge form.  We ate lunch together in the classroom and had hot chocolate with marshmallows!

REPORT CARDS will be coming home on Friday the 13th.  Talk with your child and  celebrate all of the wonderful things they have accomplished and learned!
Then sign the envelope (keep the report card) and return it to school.

Eek! Our Treasure Box is getting very low on prizes.  Small treasures from Walmart, The Dollar Store, or Zurchers are great.  Thank you for your continued support!

Thursday, January 26th
12:00 – 3:00 pm

We can take 3-5 parents.  I only have Mrs. Norman signed up so far.  Remember that if you would like to volunteer you will need to come into the school and complete a back ground check with the secretaries.  It is not hard to do and the secretaries will walk you through it.  To do that you will need a photo ID and social security or ID number.  It takes 48 hours for the check to be completed and OPA will pay for the back ground fee.

THIS WEEK…
We will finish up our math unit on Weight by Wednesday and move onto Capacity.

We will resume Words Their Way Spelling Sorts.  Several of the children have advanced into new groups!  Make sure you look closely at the sort your child brings home this week.  If your child was in Letter Sorts and moving up to Short Vowels they will now be writing consonant, vowel, consonant words instead of just beginning sounds.

Our DIBELS Assessment will begin next week.  Part of the homework is a practice page to help prepare them for this assessment.  Please read it carefully and notify me if you have any questions.  There are 4  parts to the timed test:

1.    Letter names
2.    Identifying beginning sounds
3.    Segmenting cvc words
4.    Reading nonsense words

Last week we started our expository writing unit on EAGLES.  This is huge!  In the next 3 weeks we will be learning about eagles and writing about them to create a book.  This book will then be submitted to the Love Your Library Contest that the library is hosting.  This is always a wonderful book.  I can't wait to see what the children write about this year!

Have a fabulous week!

Mrs. Scalise
