Week 6

Our first Parent Teacher Conference is coming up in 2 weeks on Wednesday & Thursday, October 18th & 19th
·        Wed. the 18th          1:15 - 6:45 pm
·        Thurs. the 19th        8:00 – 11:45 am
Each conference will be 15 minutes.  We will be discussing your child’s progress and introducing you to our Raz Kids program and Words Their Way Spelling Program that we are starting shortly.  Your child will also be sharing their Leadership Notebook with you.  It shows some of the things they have already accomplished in kindergarten.

In the past we have had you come to the school to sign up.  Now, we are doing the sign-up electronically.  Just click on the link below:

Choose a convenient time and click on the yellow box below that time.  I will send out a reminder a couple of days before conferences.  Don’t forget to bring your child with you.  We can’t wait to share with you the many ways your child has grown!

Your children are READING ROCK STARS!  I love seeing how many minutes you are spending reading with and to your child each week!  Each month you turn in reading minutes your child earns a Pizza Hut coupon, good for 1 FREE personal pan pizza courtesy of PIZZA HUT!  Congratulations!  The coupon expires after 30 days so make sure you use it before then.

We practiced the Letter Cc in so many ways this week.  We painted curvy carrots.  We ate yummy crunchy carrots.  We made C in Play-Doh, then cut it into pieces while practicing counting 1-5.  We read and acted out the story Caps For Sale.  We ate cucumbers that were cut into circles.  We cut through circles.  Finally, we learned that even though the letter Cc is a consonant it makes 2 sounds like in the word: circle.

With the Letter Nn we went on a hunt. We searched for Nn in the newspaper. (Hint: this is a great way to reinforce and review letters, numbers and snap words at home – go on a hunt for them in newspapers, magazines, or junk mail)

This habit is all about having a plan.  We have a plan in school to be safe, prepared, and responsible.  This week we will be talking about FIRE SAFETY.  We have practiced 2 fire drills in our school this year and we are getting really good at knowing what to do in case there is a fire and where to go.

HOME LEARN FOLDER    The second set of yellow sight words will be coming home on Monday.  Cut them apart.  Keep them in their Sight Word baggie. Then practice them daily.

This week we will continue counting from 1-10 in linear, array, and scattered formations. We have discovered that each number can be made up of 2 parts.  For example: 7 is a group of 5 and 2.  We are also learning rhymes to help us remember how to make each number.  Ask your child to tell you them.

Thought for the week...
When children are immersed in timeless, universal principles—such as responsibility, service, and honesty—both at home and at school, their tremendous worth and potential is affirmed and reinforced.  They develop confidence, integrity, and the courage to do the right thing.

Week 5

We have been working so hard in class on recognizing rhyming words.  Thank you for supporting your child by sending them with their 2 rhyming objects last week.  Take a look at some of the fun combinations the kids came up with.

LETTERS we explored last week…

Aa We learned about the letter Aa.  Our motion for Aa is to pretend that we are holding an apple in our hand and sweep it across our body from left to right saying the /a/ sound.  Have your child show you the motion.  We learned that the letter Aa is also a vowel.  That means it makes 2 sounds: long – ape & apricot, short – apple.  If it is the short sound it glues 2 consonants together, like in the words:  mat, Sam.  We also graphed the apples we brought from home and then ate them.  They were awesome!

Aa is for APRICOT

We found a star inside of an apple

Pp We explored the letter Pp.  We popped popcorn and used our 5 senses to touch, taste, hear, smell, and see it.  We decided that we liked the sense of taste the most!  We tasted salted and buttered popcorn and unsalted popcorn.  Then we graphed what we liked the best.

By the end of last week your child should be able to recognize, write, and make the sound(s) for the following letters (capital and lowercase): Mm, Ss, Rr, Tt, Pp, Nn, Cc

They also need to be able to read (without prompting) the high frequency words:  my, the, a, and, l, like, to.

There are some great videos on YouTube for each of these letters and words.  Here is just one example for the word: and

Happy FALL

Remember to send your child to school with a jacket every day.  It is chilly out at recess and especially on the big-toy because it is in the shade a good part of the day.

OPA CARNIVAL ~ Friday, September 29th

Sow a thought, reap an action;
Sow an action, reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a character;
Sow a character, read a destiny.
