Week 8

7 HABITS

This is the new habit we are starting to learn about.  When we begin with the end in mind we have a plan.  If plan A doesn’t work, then we have to think of a plan B.  We are learning that we should “work first, then play”.

One of the children in our class that is learning how to Begin With the End in Mind is Avery Cottle!  She is super proactive, a great listener and kind to everyone!  She was chosen by popular vote to be our class Eagle Leader.  She will represent our class on the OPA Eagle Leader Team.  Congratulations Avery!

Each week I will be looking for a student in our class that is a great example the 7 Habits.  I will spotlight that student in our class blog.  I wonder who it will be next week?

Parent Teacher Conferences ~ Oct. 13th & 14th
Thank you for being so proactive and signing up for a conference time!  We already have 8 parents signed up.  If you would like to conference another day before school or after school please contact me.  I need to meet with every parent, but I can be flexible.  When you come make sure your child comes with you.  This is because the children will be presenting their work and show their progress in their Data Leadership Binders to you.  I can’t wait for them to shine as leaders and “Show what they know and where they did grow”!

HOMEWORK FOLDER
Today, your child brought home their 2nd set of (pink) snap words.  Please have them cut them apart and add them to their snap word baggie.  We have already learned the words: is, in, we

If your child turned in reading minutes all 4 weeks in the month of September then he/she earned a free pizza from Pizza Hut!  Congratulations! Just take the coupon to any Pizza Hut to redeem.  Use it soon because it expires in 30 days.

Last Week in Class…
We studied all about our 5 senses.  We discovered that we don’t need our sense of hearing when it comes to food but we definitely use our sense of taste.  We made predictions about different foods and whether or not they are bitter, sweet, sour or salty.  The cocoa powder was very deceiving and many children learned what the word – bitter, means.

Letter Dd: The Doc is in
The motion for this letter is to point your thumb down and say /d/ /d/ /d/ down. We made a Doctor Bag and used our new snap words: is, in.

Letter Gg
The motion for Gg is to act like a gorilla and beat your chest /g/ /g/ /g/ gorilla.  We made green grass G’s and ate green grapes on the green grass with a gorilla named George while wearing green glasses. (thank you to everyone who donated green grapes).  They were great!

Letter Ff
The motion for Ff is to pretend like we are flying and say /f/ /f/ /f/ fly.  We drew fish and made a forest fire picture.

Words Their Way Spelling
Over the past several weeks lots of your child’s homework assignments have been to cut apart and sort into groups different pictures into categories that are identical.  All of that practice was to get them ready to for our spelling program.  Next week your child will be bringing home a spelling sort (a new one will come home every week).  They may be sorting pictures with 2, 3 or 4 different beginning sounds, short vowel CVC words, or digraphs.  On Friday your child will be given a test to show what they know.  They will be sorting their pictures and writing ONLY the beginning sound.  Unless, they are in the short vowel or digraph group.  Those children will be writing their words.  Each test will be worth 10 points.

I will be sharing more information about this program at Parent-Teacher-Conferences.

Starting last week we have been practicing how to do these sorts in class.  Take a look and have your child show you which group they are in.
