Week 9

To all of you wonderfully proactive parents!  Every parent has signed up for a Parent Teacher Conference time!  I can’t wait to meet with you this week and share some fabulous things your child has been learning!  Your child will be driving the conference and showing you their Leadership Binder so don’t forget to bring him/her with you.

7 Habits Spotlight…   Ellis Cash!  He is a great example of “work first, then play”!  He pays attention in class and gets his work done so that he can always go to recess and other activities.

Last Week…

We learned about the letter Ll.  We went on a leaf hunt and used our leaves to make Lovely Leaf pictures.  Then, we drank lemonade and played Leap Frog while counting to 10.

To finish up the letter Ff we talked about our 1st patriotic symbol – the Flag.  We talked about how we are making a promise to be proactive at home, school, and in the community when we put our hand on our heart and pledge allegiance every morning in class.

We have been working so hard on reading, counting and writing the numbers 0-10.  Many of them have mastered 0-5 but are still struggling with 6-10.  Have your child write these numbers for you.  Then practice the ones they need more work on.
There are many counting video clips on YouTube.  This is one of our favorites.

Words Their Way Spelling
Last week we started our spelling program in class.  I have leveled each of the children and placed them in a group that will best meet their abilities at this time.  Each of the children cut apart their sort and worked on sorting it and writing the beginning sounds or words (if they are in the short vowel or digraph groups) every day.  Then, on Friday they took a test to “show what they know and where they did grow”.  You will see that test in your child’s homework folder. Everyone has cause to celebrate!
  •  If your child is absent on a test day they will take the test the day they return.
Starting this week your child will be given a new sort as part of their homework.  They will need to cut it apart on Monday and practice sorting it, daily.

They will also have a “sorting mat” where they will practice writing the beginning sounds or words.  THIS MAT WILL NEED TO BE RETURNED IN THE ENVELOPE WITH THEIR HOMEWORK EVERY THURSDAY.  The sort stays home so that they can practice it and be ready for the test.

This is an example of the 2 Letter Sort Group for this week.
When your child returns the Sorting Mat it should be filled with capital and lower case letters from the pictures in their sort (do not write the word).  Look for the orange or yellow note attached to last week's sorting test to see how your child did on their test.
Above, is an example of the words/pictures in the Short Vowel Group.  If your child is in this group they will be writing the words - not just the beginning sounds.

At times I will be moving children onto the next level as they show proficiency.  The levels go in this order:
·         2 Letter Sorts
·         3 Letter Sorts
·         4 Letter Sorts
·         Short Vowel Words
·         Digraphs

Please help your child study these, daily.  The test this week (because it is a short week) will be on Thursday.

DONATION NEEDED:
  •          More empty toilet paper tubes (I need 12 more)
  •          15 kiwi for Wednesday
  •          1 bag of chocolate kisses for Tuesday
Thank you so much for helping me out with donations!  You have been so generous but, before you purchase anything on the donation list make sure you contact me to see if another parent has already volunteered for that item.

REMINDER... Our field trip to the cannery has been changed to WEDNESDAY, October 26th.  We will leave the school at 12:00 and return about 1:20 pm.  Please let me know if you'd like to join us.

Have a tremendous week!
Mrs. Scalise
