Oct. 18th
& 19th
Thank
you for being so proactive and signing up for a conference time! We already have 18 parents signed up. If you would like to conference another day
before school or after school please contact me to make those arrangements. I need to meet with every parent and I can
be flexible. When you come make sure your child comes, too. This is because the children will be
presenting their work and show their progress in their Leadership Binders to you. I
can’t wait for them to shine as leaders and “Show what they know and where they did grow”!
If you still need to sign up for a time refer to last week's blog post. I have posted the link there.
The
motion for this letter is to point your thumb down and say /d/ /d/ /d/
down. We drew dinosaurs and ate dates. Yum!
The motion for Gg is to act like a gorilla and beat your chest 3 times saying the sound /g/ /g/ /g/ gorilla. It also “copy-cats” the letter /j/ sound, like in the word giraffe.
We
made green grass G’s and ate giant green grapes on the green grass with a gorilla named George (thank
you Brie for the green grapes). We also wore
green glasses that glowed in the dark. It was great fun!
The
motion for Ff is to put your hand out and say /f/ /f/ /f/ give me five. We also made a forest fire picture and talked about fire safety at home and school.
When
we write a sentence we say, “Letters make
words. Words come together to make
sentences. Sentences begin with a
capital and end with punctuation.” Have your child show you the actions we
do when we say it. Our goal last week
was to write a complete sentence with spaces between words, using our sight
words: we, go, to. I was so excited to
see the kids progress and the ideas they came up with!
Last
week we learned what a preposition is.
It is a position word. We did
many activities centered around learning these words. These are some of the prepositions we learned: in front, beside, over, under, behind, in, out
This
week pay special attention to our homework.
We want your child to teach their homework helper about what it means to
be A 4 STAR writer, drawer, and colorer. We do not expect perfection, but this
rubric is a great way to start conversations about stretching our
abilities. Look for this rubric in the
folder and keep it handy. Refer to it
often as a guide.
Over
the past several weeks lots of your child’s homework assignments have been to
cut apart and sort into groups different pictures into categories that are identical. All of that practice was to get them ready to
for our spelling program.
This week your child will bring home a spelling sort (a new one will come home
every week) in a yellow manila envelope.
There are 5 different spelling group levels:
- 2 letter sorts
- 3 letter sorts
- 4 letters sorts
- Short Vowel Words
- Digraphs
I have assessed each child and placed them in one of the above groups according to their abilities at this time. As they grow and learn they will have the opportunity to advance to the next level.
A
schedule of how to practice their sort on Mon. – Thurs. will be in their Spelling Envelope (in their Homework
Folder). You can also see a video demonstration
of how to help your child practice on Mrs. Maag’s blog:
Each
Friday your child will be given a test to show what they know. If they are in the 2, 3, or 4 Letter Sort
group they will be sorting their pictures and writing ONLY the beginning sound. If
they are in the short vowel or digraph groups they will be writing 10 of the
words from their sort. Each test will be
worth 10 points.
Please
let me know it you have any questions.
We have now finished learning how to write and count the numbers 0-10. The children should be able to recognize and read the numbers in a random order and write each of them.
This week we will be having a...
Please help your child practice and review these numbers at home to be prepared.
We love THE OPA GARDEN!
Thanks to Mrs. Cash we got to work in the OPA Garden last week. We weeded it and helped plant garlic. It was fun to get our hands in the dirt!
